For example, the cardholder may claim that they didn't receive the goods, or that their card information was used fraudulently. The disputed funds will then be removed from your <a href=\"\/essentials\/getting-paid#payable-batch\">payable batch<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many disputed transactions can be defended. If you want to defend a dispute, you need to provide documents to show that the payment was valid, for example a proof that you have sent the goods. The required documents depend on the reason for the dispute. If you have successfully defended the dispute, the funds will be added back to your payable batch.<\/p>\n<p>The timeframe to defend a dispute depends on the card scheme. If you do not provide the defense documents within the required timeframe, you will automatically lose the dispute. If you have lost a dispute, Adyen subtracts the funds from your payable batch, and returns them to the cardholder's account.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"view\">View disputes<\/h2>\n<p>To view and manage disputes, you need to have the <strong>Merchant dispute management<\/strong> <a href=\"\/essentials\/users#roles\">user role<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To view disputes:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Log in to <a href=\"https:\/\/essentials-live.adyen.com\/essentials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" class=\"external-link no-image\">Essentials<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Go to <strong>Disputes<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe Disputes section shows a list of transactions that have been disputed, as well as their:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Status<\/strong>. Whether you have <span translate=\"no\"><strong>Won<\/strong><\/span> or <span translate=\"no\"><strong>Lost<\/strong><\/span> the dispute.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reason code<\/strong>: Why the transaction is disputed. For more information, refer to <a href=\"\/essentials\/disputes-reason-codes\">Dispute reason codes<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Expiration<\/strong>: You have until this date to defend the dispute.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disputed amount<\/strong>: The value of the transaction being disputed.<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Clicking on a dispute provides more information about the dispute, including the number of <strong>Days to act<\/strong>. Examples of defense documentation are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Copy of receipt.<\/li>\n<li>Shopper information + Device ID.<\/li>\n<li>Communication where the cardholder confirms possession of the goods.<\/li>\n<li>Proof that terms and conditions were clearly communicated to the cardholder before the transaction was processed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a rel=\"lightbox\" href=\"\/user\/pages\/docs\/29.essentials\/23.disputes\/disputes-handle.png\" src=\"\">\n  <img alt=\"\" src=\"\/user\/pages\/docs\/29.essentials\/23.disputes\/disputes-handle.png\" \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"accept\">Accept a dispute<\/h2>\n<p>You may decide to accept a dispute to avoid a lengthy (and possibly costly) dispute process, especially if you agree with the dispute.
