Our [Standalone terminals](/point-of-sale/standalone) supports credit and debit cards, and wallet payment methods. Adyen payment terminals support popular local and global payment methods. When customers use a payment method from another country/region, the terminal automatically switches to the corresponding language and shows a UI your customers understand. Debit cards in the US support a "front-of-card" global network like Visa, Mastercard, or Discover, and one or more "back-of-card" networks collectively known as US Debit. is not possible to make [unreferenced refunds](/point-of-sale/basic-tapi-integration/refund-payment/unreferenced) in Brazil and Mexico. To refund a payment in these countries/regions you must make a [referenced refund](/point-of-sale/basic-tapi-integration/refund-payment/referenced). girocard allows offline EMV payments even when this is not enabled for your account. Settlement is guaranteed in these cases, but your integration must be able to handle [offline payments](/point-of-sale/offline-payment#offline-transaction-response). ### Card entry methods Our terminals support reading the card using either EMV chip, contactless through Near Field Communication (NFC), or magnetic swipe. If all these card entry methods fail, you can manually enter the card details (see [Manual Key Entry (MKE)](/point-of-sale/enter-payment-manually) and [Mail order/Telephone Order (MOTO)](/point-of-sale/mail-and-telephone-order-moto)). However, certain local card schemes decline transactions where the card details were obtained by magnetic swipe or entered manually. This is the case for: * Bancontact * BankAxept * Cartes Bancaires * Dankort * girocard * Interac ### Cardholder verification Credit and debit cards can require a cardholder verification method (CVM) when used in a payment terminal. Verification is commonly with a personal identification number (PIN) or shopper signature. Support of all CVMs does not require any additional integration effort. For more information, see [Cardholder verification methods](/point-of-sale/cardholder-verification-methods). ### Co-badged cards Co-badged cards support multiple payment methods, usually a local card scheme for domestic payments and a global card scheme for international payments. There are also prepaid cards in combination with a global card scheme. When the shopper presents a co-badged card, we apply rules to automatically select the most suitable payment method on the card. You can customize some of these rules, and it is always possible to manually select a payment method for a specific transaction. The payment terminal communicates with the mobile wallet through the near field communication (NFC) chip in the shopper's phone or smartwatch. You [initiate a payment](/point-of-sale/basic-tapi-integration/make-a-payment#make-a-payment) like you usually do. 2. The shopper presents their smartphone or smartwatch to the terminal. 3. The shopper verifies the payment on their device. The device may ask the shopper for their PIN or password, or for biometric authentication through fingerprint or facial recognition. 4. If the payment is successful, the terminal display shows the payment is approved. In a Terminal API integration, you [receive the payment result](/point-of-sale/basic-tapi-integration/make-a-payment#payment-response), as you would receive the result of a card payment. ## Wallet passes Apart from credit and debit cards, customers can also keep other digital passes in their NFC wallet, such as loyalty cards, vouchers, and tickets. You can create your own NFC-enabled wallet pass and tie this in with your loyalty program. When the customer has your pass in their NFC wallet, you can accept it when the shopper makes a point-of-sale payment. For instructions see [Wallet passes](/point-of-sale/loyalty/wallet-passes). Either the shopper uses the app on their phone to scan the QR code shown on the terminal and then verifies the payment using the app, or the shopper launches a QR code from the wallet app on their phone, and you scan this with a barcode scanner to pass the QR code data in a payment request.\ For more information, see [QR code payments](/point-of-sale/qr-code-wallets). IRIS refunds and cancellations must be handled through your acquirer bank. #### Local onboarding Currently, you can only use IRIS with Adyen as a [payment gateway](/get-started-with-adyen/adyen-glossary#payment-gateway). This means you need onboard with a [Greek bank that supports IRIS's services](https://www.dias.com.gr/en/services/iris-payments/). Familiarize yourself with the [onboarding process](https://help.adyen.com/updates/mandatory-acceptance-of-iris-instant-payments). ## One-time numeric code The customer generates a unique, single-use numeric code with their bank or payment app. They enter this\ code on the payment terminal to authorize the transaction. Such a payment can be initiated by your store staff from the POS app or by the shopper on the terminal.\ For more information, see [one-time numeric code payments](/point-of-sale/alternative-payment-methods/otc-digit-based-payments). You can process payments with these gift cards, but no other operations. ## Chargeback risk A chargeback is when the issuing bank collects funds back from you on behalf of a cardholder. **Non-fraud chargebacks** for point-of-sale transactions go through a dispute flow similar to that for ecommerce. Refer to [Understanding and defending disputes](/risk-management/understanding-disputes). **Fraud chargebacks** shouldn't happen for point of sale transactions that are considered secure. Whether a transaction is considered secure, depends on the card entry method and cardholder verification method (CMV) used. From highest to lowest security, this refers to: * EMV chip and PIN * EMV chip and signature * Magnetic swipe reader and PIN * Magnetic swipe reader and signature With these secure transactions, the liability for fraud chargebacks shifts from you to the issuing bank. The situation is quite different with point-of-sale transactions that are considered insecure: * [Offline transactions](/point-of-sale/offline-payment) * [Manual keyed entry](/point-of-sale/enter-payment-manually) of the card details With these insecure transactions, there is no liability shift.
