The term 'endless aisle' refers to a setup where you let customers place ecommerce orders in your store or other physical location.

Some benefits of endless aisle are:

  • Extend your product range.
    Let shoppers order products that happen to be out of stock, or products that are not sold in-store because they are online exclusives or because you're operating a showroom store.

  • Improve customer experience.
    Give customers the option to have the products delivered to any address. Traveling customers especially will appreciate this option.

  • Understand stock flows.
    Use data from ecommerce orders to allocate stock to physical locations. This can help maximize sales and meet customer demand.

Technical setup

The technical setup to enable endless aisle can be:

Devices Payment request through Remarks
Tablet and dedicated terminal Terminal API request from an app or web interface on the tablet Low integration effort. Separate devices, only used for endless aisle sales.
Tablet and shared terminals Terminal API request from an app or web interface on the tablet Medium integration effort. Transactions are sent to terminals that are also used by the POS system for transactions that are not endless aisle.
POS system and existing terminals Terminal API request from the POS app using local or cloud communications High integration effort. The POS system must be able to combine point-of-sale and ecommerce flows and collect delivery details.

App or web interface

Apart from the devices and an integration with our Adyen payments platform, you need to build an app or web interface to access your online inventory. We recommend this app or web interface includes a way to identify the store or the sales associate.

Compliance requirements

In an endless aisle setup, a transaction using a payment terminal is considered a card-present point-of-sale (POS) transaction. This means you must assign the payment terminal to the merchant account under a legal entity registered in the country where the store is located.

For example, imagine an endless aisle solution with a British legal entity responsible for ecommerce purchases, and physical stores in The Netherlands. When a customer uses the endless aisle solution in a store in The Netherlands, then the terminal must be assigned to the Dutch legal entity associated with the Dutch store. The Dutch store and terminal can't be assigned to the British entity because this obscures the true location of the store.
