Migrating users to single sign-on

Allow your existing users access to the Customer Area using single sign-on (SSO).

If you have set up SSO for your Customer Area, but still have users logging in with username, account, and password, you can migrate these users to SSO. After migration, they must use SSO to log in to the Customer Area.

Adyen doesn't require your users to migrate to SSO. You can decide to migrate some or all of your users.

Note that users who have the same email address for two or more company accounts, can access only one company account after migration to SSO, unless they use a different unique email address not associated with any other company account. To access other company accounts, users should log in with username, account, and password.

You must migrate test and live Customer Area users separately. For example, if a user completes the migration process in the test Customer Area, it only allows them to use SSO for the test Customer Area.

Before you begin

You must have one of the following roles:

  • Merchant admin
  • Merchant user management

Managing migration for users

Go to the Manage user migration panel:

  1. Log in to your Customer Area.
  2. Go to Settings > Users.
  3. Select Manage user migration.

In the panel, you can do the following:

We recommend keeping a few admin users on the username, account, and password login method so that they can manage users and SSO settings without having to use SSO to log in.

Migration statuses

A user can have one of the following migration statuses:

  • Requires review: the user doesn't meet the requirements for migration.
  • Ready to migrate: you can start migration for the user.
  • Pending migration: you've started migration for the user, and they must complete the steps.

User requirements

To migrate a user to SSO, their email address must be unique. The email address can only be assigned to a single user because it becomes their username. If you're migrating a user, but their email is being used by more than one person, you must change the email for this user:

  1. Log in to your Customer Area.
  2. Go to Settings > Users.
  3. In the user list, select the user for whom you want to change the email address.
  4. In the upper right corner of the user details page, select Edit icon.
  5. Change the email address for the user.
  6. Select Save to complete the process.

We send a verification email to the user's new email address, and you can start migration for them. They verify their email address during the migration process.

Starting a migration

  1. Log in to your Customer Area.
  2. Go to Settings > Users.
  3. In the user list, select the user you want to migrate.
  4. Select Start migration.

The user receives an email to complete the required steps for migration.

The next time they log in to the Customer Area, they are prompted to complete the migration. The user needs to login with their old credentials to complete the migration. The user can't access the Customer Area until they've completed the migration. When they complete migration, we send them a confirmation email with their new SSO credentials. From this moment, they can't access the Customer Area with their old credentials.

You can verify that their new login method is updated to SSO on the Users page.

Canceling a migration

You can cancel a user's migration only if they haven't completed the steps of the migration process. Reasons for canceling the process may include:

  • Your identity provider is not working and making it impossible for your user to be migrated to SSO.
  • The migration is not working, and you need your user to get back their access to the Customer Area.

Restarting a canceled migration is possible at any time.

  1. Log in to your Customer Area.
  2. Go to Settings > Users.
  3. In the user list, select the user for whom you want to cancel the migration.
  4. On the user details page, select Cancel migration.
  5. Confirm your choice by selecting Cancel migration.

We send an email to inform the user about the cancellation.
