Limited availability
Automated document checks are currently available in Australia, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Some of the processes and documentation may change as the feature evolves.
Adyen attempts to verify your bank account automatically. If automatic verification is not possible, Adyen asks you to upload a bank document. When you upload the document, Adyen's automated system checks it immediately. You receive feedback in seconds, so you can fix issues right away and avoid delays in the verification process.
Before you upload
Make sure your document meets the requirements for bank documents.
In summary, your document must show:
- The account holder name, which must match the legal entity name on record.
- The account number or IBAN.
- The date of issuance, which must be within the last 12 months. Exceptions apply for RIBs, checks, and some online banking screenshots.
- An indicator that the document was issued by a bank, such as the bank logo, the bank name in its bank-specific font, or a BIC/SWIFT code.
The accepted file formats are PDF (preferred), JPEG, JPG, or PNG. Upload one file at a time.
The maximum file size is 4 MB.
Accepted document types
Adyen accepts the following bank documents:
- Bank statement
- Bank agreement
- Deposit slip or deposit form
- Screenshot of your online banking environment
- Official letter from your bank
- Check
- Relevé d'Identité Bancaire (RIB) — France
- TAMIEYTHPIO — Greece
- Bank passbook — Singapore
For checks and deposit forms, additional requirements apply, such as stamps, signatures, or visible security features. See requirements for bank documents for the full list.
How to upload
In Hosted Onboarding, if asked to upload a bank document:
- Go to the bank account step, if not already there.
- Drag and drop your document onto the upload area, or select a file from your device.
- Adyen's automated system checks your document. This takes a few seconds.
- You receive immediate feedback on whether Adyen accepted the document or if you should consider replacing it.
What happens after you upload
When you upload, Adyen's automated system checks your document. The check takes a few seconds. You then see one of the following results:
Review and submit (document accepted)
If your document passes all checks, you are asked to review your details and make sure everything looks correct before you select Continue.
Check your bank document (document error)
If the system detects a problem with the document, you see a warning asking you to check your bank document. You have two options:
- Replace document: Upload a different bank document.
- Use this document: If you are sure the document is correct, proceed. Adyen's review team reviews it manually.
Tips for mobile uploads
- If your bank provides a PDF version of your document, upload that instead of a photo — PDFs are clearer and more likely to pass automated checks.
- Photograph the document in a well-lit area. Avoid glare from windows or overhead lights.
- Lay the document flat on a plain, dark surface before you take the photo.
- Do not zoom in on the document — zoom reduces image quality. Move closer to the document instead.
Troubleshooting common issues
| Issue | What to do |
|---|---|
| Blurry image | Retake the photo in good lighting. Hold the camera steady or place the document flat on a surface. If you upload a PDF, use the original file directly rather than a screenshot or converted version, as these can reduce image quality. |
| Document cut off | Make sure all four edges of the document are fully visible before uploading. |
| Wrong document type | Upload a bank document. Do not upload utility bills, credit card statements, or identity documents. |
| Document too old | Use a document dated within the last 12 months. Exceptions apply for some document types — see the requirements page. |
| File too large | The maximum file size is 4 MB. Make sure your file size does not exceed 4 MB. |

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to select the document type before uploading?
No. Adyen identifies the document type automatically when you upload.
What if Adyen cannot classify my document?
If the automated system cannot make a decision, Adyen's review team reviews your document manually. You do not need to take any action. Adyen contacts you if anything further is needed.
Can I upload a screenshot of my online banking app?
Yes. Screenshots of your online banking environment are accepted. The screenshot must clearly show your account number or IBAN, your name, and the bank name or logo. Screenshots do not need to show a date of issuance.
