Host-to-host in-person payments

Integrate your POS system with Adyen using your own payment hardware.

The host-to-host solution for in-person payments is in the development phase. The API, documentation, and processes will change as the solution evolves. If you have any feedback, reach out to your Adyen contact.

Our host-to-host solution enables payment facilitators to process point-of-sale payments over the plataforma de pagamentos da Adyen using their own payment devices instead of payment terminals provided by Adyen.

To learn if your business is eligible for this solution, reach out to your Adyen contact.

How it works

When the customer presents their card to your payment terminal:

  1. You read the card details using your terminal.
  2. You send us an API request to authorize the payment, specifying the card details and the transaction details.
  3. We send your transaction for authorization to the issuing bank.
  4. You receive the result as an API response.
  5. Your system presents the result to the customer.
  6. You send us another API request to complete the transaction.
  7. The payment is captured, to settle the funds to your bank account. This happens automatically, or you can capture the payment manually.

Certification

Your host-to-host setup must be certified for compliance with the card schemes. This is commonly known as the L3 certification or Mastercard M-TIP / Visa ADVT testing. As an acquirer, Adyen takes care of carrying out the certification tests and obtaining approval from the card schemes.

The certification process consists of the following steps:

  • Defining the scope of the certification.
For this you need to send us the L1 and L2 approval letters and a completed Terminal Capabilities questionnaire for each payment device that you use in your host-to-host integration.
  • Setting up environments.
We set up a testing environment that you can use for development, and a certification environment. During certification, you need to connect to the test endpoints. (See Endpoints and authentication.)
  • Running the certification.
After we successfully complete all certification tests, we submit the results to the card schemes. They then send us an official letter of certification approval.
  • Ensuring continuous compliance.
If there are updates from the card schemes, we need to assess if these updates require software development. Also, any new devices that you add to your host-to-host integration require additional certification.
