For shoppers with visual impairments, you can turn on accessibility mode from the payment terminal. The terminal then provides audio instructions during the payment.
There are various methods to turn on accessibility mode from the terminal. You can:
- Connect headphones to the audio connector of the terminal.
- Select the accessibility button
on the screen of the terminal.
- Press and hold the 5 key on the keypad of the terminal.
The available methods depend on the terminal model.

How it works

You start a transaction as you normally do.

You turn on accessibility mode using one of the methods that the terminal model supports, either:
- Connect a pair of headphones to the audio connector of the terminal.
- Select the accessibility button on the terminal screen.
- Press and hold the 5 key on the physical keypad of the terminal.

The terminal reads out the text shown on the terminal screen, and instructs the shopper on how to present their payment card.
The timeout period is extended to give the shopper time to listen to the audio instructions. -
The shopper presents their card to complete the payment.

Accessibility mode turns off automatically.
Use headphones
You can turn on accessibility mode for the duration of a transaction by connecting headphones to the terminal. You can do this at any step of the transaction, except when the terminal shows the PIN entry screen.
To turn on accessibility mode with the headphones:
- Start a transaction.
- Plug a pair of headphones into the audio connector of the terminal.
Audio guidance continues through the terminal speakers if the shopper unplugs the headphones during the transaction.
When the accessible payment is completed or canceled, accessibility mode turns off automatically.
Use the accessibility button
A member of your staff or the shopper can use the on-screen accessibility button to turn on accessibility mode for the duration of a transaction. This button is not present on the PIN entry screen.
To turn on accessibility mode using the accessibility button:
- Start a transaction.
- On the terminal screen, select the accessibility button

To switch back to normal mode during the transaction:
- Select the accessibility button again.
- Double-tap on the screen.
When the accessible payment is completed or canceled, accessibility mode turns off automatically.
Use the keypad
On terminal models with a physical keypad, such as P630 and M450, a member of your staff or the shopper can press the 5 key to turn on accessibility mode. This is possible at any step of the transaction, except when the terminal shows the PIN entry screen.
To activate accessibility mode using the keypad:
- Start a transaction.
- On the keypad of the terminal, press and hold the 5 key.
To switch back to normal mode during the transaction:
- Press and hold the 5 key on the keypad again.
When the accessible payment is completed or canceled, accessibility mode turns off automatically.
